One of my favorite things about summer is the abundance of fresh, locally grown produce. You will find me at farmers’ market most days this time of year. The bright colors, the sweet and earthy smell of fresh fruits and veggies, and the beautiful flower arrangements are simply irresistible!

In Ayurveda, India’s holistic system of healing, summer is known as the season of pitta dosha. Dosha in Sanskrit means constitution or body/mind type. Pitta represents the elements of fire and water. According to Ayurveda, living in harmony with nature is important for optimal health, and as we move through the seasons, nature provides us with what our body needs most to stay nourished and well balanced.

During summer, the element of heat predominates and thus nature gifts us an abundance of fruits and vegetables. Their cooling properties help to put off the excess fire in the body and help us stay well hydrated and cool.

Watermelon and berries are both light, sweet and cooling which is why I picked them for today’s recipe. Although bursting with sweetness, these fruits are naturally low in sugar and a refreshing choice during the hot summer days. The lemon adds an energizing zest to this cocktail making it even more irresistible.
